The Timber Engineering and Applied Mechanics (TEAM) Laboratory was established in 1982 within the Department of Wood Science, Faculty of Forestry, UBC. As a research group, we specialize in timber building technology, encompassing engineering, wood science, and architecture. We focus on comprehensive research evaluating the performance of wood buildings and their structural components, including various connection systems. Additionally, our research contributes to the development and standardization of new building technologies, supporting the Canadian forest product industry.
TEAM consists of graduate students, skilled researchers, and experienced technicians, all led by Prof. Frank Lam in collaboration with Prof. Ricardo O. Foschi. Their world-class reputations have helped TEAM build strong relationships with international timber-building technology research institutes in Asia and Europe.
The laboratory maintains a robust management system to ensure consistent service quality, whether provided in the lab or at field sites and also earned accreditation from the International Accreditation Service (IAS). TEAM’s testing activities cover the planning of testing programs in collaboration with clients, including receiving, storing, testing, and disposing of test materials. The laboratory also maintains calibration and testing records and is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reporting data to clients.
